Happy halloween! It has been 1 month and 3 days since my last confession, i mean post. My trip to Canada was such a relaxing detox from work and phones and internet that i guess i just started neglecting my blog. So, here's an update on what i've been up to:
- left arm started going numb with longer runs. numb arm was so uncomfortable that i started holding it funny, which lead to neck/shoulder problems on that side. now i know what a muscle spasm feels like--not good! turns out that my ulnar nerve subluxes out of its little groove and gets all irritated when i bend my arm a lot. i'm trying to pay extra attention to my form when i run and what i'm doing with my arms. running with my arms straight would probably look kooky, so not really an option.
- because of all my arm/neck/shoulder crap, i hardly ran during the 3 weeks leading up to the 'run like hell' half marathon. i was only doing 4 milers and track work at best, so i was pretty sure i would just ditch the hm. and then as soon as i saw an asics ad on tv or read some article in runners world, i'd change my mind and decide that i NEEDED to run. and back and forth until race day. basically, when the alarm went off in the a.m. i was still making up my mind whether or not to run.
- so i did the hm and i was pretty on target with my "anything under a 2" goal for the first 7 miles, but once the course hit terwilliger (a rather hilly several miles) i started to see the minutes pile on. I tried to make up time on the downhill portion heading back into downtown portland, but the 3 weeks of barely running showed itself. My legs were cramping in a way i hadn't felt since the last few miles of the vancouver marathon. it was a good experience to draw from though, b/c i was able to tell myself that the cramps will go away, just keep running. i missed my goal by 52 seconds, but hey it was still a 4 minute pr over last year: 2:00:51
- the first thing i did after the race was to print of a new hm plan (gonna try the FIRST plan)
On non-running news, i was finally able to fulfill a lifelong ambition of dressing up as milli vanilli. how did i ever convince john to put on this costume? btw i made the wigs myself with yarn and a hot glue gun. hot glue guns are the best--you know it's true.
